At the base of a few red maple we planted seven young artic kiwi plants.
The varieties we chose:
- 2 Kiwi Polygana - male and female
- 2 Kiwi Kolomika - male and female
- 2 Kiwi Arguta rosanna - male and female
- 1 kiwi Ken's Red - female
We want to use our mature trees as the scaffold for our kiwi vines. We will train them to cross to other trees and keep them pruned at a reachable height as we do not plan to climb trees to get the kiwi fruit.
After planting this spring, our kiwis took on new growth but by the end of summer a few of them had the leaves turn yellow and fall off. We are concerned that they did not like our extremely wet summer and had too wet feet for such young plants. One ray of hope, one plant after losing all of it's leaves started budding out again and had 3 new leaves by the time the first frost had arrived. We are hoping that our kiwi will survive. We will see next spring.
